I'm big in Japan

I don't know what it is about Japanese text that make s everything look cooler to me. But I love the way the cover art for the card game looks in Japanese.

Thanks for the link :)

Sory folks I have to cancel SDCC

Well it super sucks.I have a table but looks like I got to stay home this time.

Hopefully I'll be out for next year.

Anyone I was going to deliver stuff to in person please shoot me a reminder e-mail and I'll get on shipping stuff out with extra I'm sorry goodies in toe.

The major delay was t-shirts, but I'll have that remedied hopefully this coming week.

Ok so after a few final tweaks here's the finished image.

And here are a few variations on the logo.

The Title logo I was working with before was created as a place holder and I felt never quite captured what I was going for. Below is an example of the sort of thing I'll do in illustrator. I'll make a variety of alternative versions of a logo. I'll play with sizing, kerning and other relationships all slight variations on a theme. Then I'll narrow it down to my 3 top choices and shop it around to a few folks to see what they think. In this case the general consensus was that the top one worked the best. The third one got a lot of reactions as well but I think it would work better in context of a chapter header, so I'll save it for later use.

And here is the finished thing.

the earlier version of the title treatment I had come up with had a relationship between the logo and the image but I felt lacked room for title dressing but also lacked the grittiness or movement I had been trying to achieve. Obviously Title dressing can be placed over top of any image and in anyway you want, but I was looking to place the text over a stark backdrop and to have room to play with negative space to help convey the mood of the book.

Obviously this was not a detailed tutorial more look into process but hopefully you found it useful.

More soon.

Making a Night cover part 2

ok I skipped a few steps to get to this point in the coloring. And I'm sure that can annoy some but I'll cover the way I tackle basic build up in a different process post.

So what I did to get to this point was toss in some base values and colors as well as layering some texture layers. then I adjusted the overall color scheme using a gradient map layer. I usually use these either as a layer set to 'normal' or 'color' but at a partial opacity. I experiment a lot and make custom gradients up as I go. I keep messing around untill I find something that strikes me.
Then I add some normal color back over top.
Next I usually step over to painter and start to push the colors and values further. In this case I primarily to 3 brushes:
an fx glow brush to bring out some highlights.
a digital watercolor brush for glazing.
and a grainy blender to smear things around a bit.
And then a bit more building up. Usually back and forth a few more times between photoshop and painter.
Ok so next post I'll finish up. I plan on playing around for a bit with the existing cover dressing and the logo.

More soon.

Making a Night cover part 1

So I'm finally back on working on Night. Over the weekend I'm gonna post process picks for the cover treatment we are working on. Not sure if this will be the final idea fro the cover. but I thought I'd share the process I go through getting there.

Ok so I'm gonna start with the pencils.

The current Idea I was working with for the title dressing was a split graphic, with the Logo and text in the upper half and the image in the bottom. So the framing was going to be widescreen. Part of the reasoning behind doing things this way is that it will be well suited for further use on the PSP/IPod format.

This was a mock up I made while I was working on the idea of cover format a few months back.

And Here is a quick look at approximate placement. I plan on giving the title logo a little more breathing room at the top so I made the image a bit wider than the old mock up.

Back from the Dead!

Ok,

Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me or messaged me trying to see what was up.
and as the latest batch have been questions like 'are you still alive' I figure
I got to say something or people really will think I've kicked the bucket.

Here is a summery of what's been going on over the last 6 or so months...

First I was swamped with work and conventions, the usual summer madness.
Then right in the middle of all that I thought I had broken my foot.
Which turned out to be a form of metabolic arthritis better known as gout.
At the same time I had a bunch of family stuff come up that would
give falcon crest/dynasty a run for it's money.

sort of right in the middle of all this madness we decided to do a few "small renos" around the house.
One of these things was re-tile the basement bathroom...and a little unexpected mold latter- we ended up having to gut the entire basement.

I won't bore you with the details but look up murhphy's law.
But one last double feature addition to the house repairs from hell list. No joke, about 3 weeks after replacing the leaking roof, the clay pipes we thought we already had dug out came back(or at least the raw sewage did)

So by no means is the insanity over but I had to chime in and at least give some explanation.

Ok so now that things are starting to get back on track, as of today (god willing) I will be back to posting as close to daily as I can.

The new website I had planned for September of last year should be coming in the next few weeks or month or so just as soon as I can find someone to finish it.

Also anyone who is still waiting on a t-shirt or artworks from me please e-mail me a reminder. attila@600poundgorilla.com

I am really sorry and I'll try and make it up to everyone with free crap and other forms of attila love.

I'll follow up tomorrow with some art posts.

TCAF + quick update

Hey all thanks to the folks who checked up on me after San Diego. Seems the day I was leaving to come back, I went a broke my foot. Needless to say put me out of commision for a bit when I got back.

But no time to rest because this weekend is the Bi Annual TCAF show http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf It'll be held at the old Victoria College at 93 charles Street west. I'll be set up in the 2nd floor foyer with a ton of other folks. also I'll be participating in a Digital Comics and Digital media workshop on Saturday from 3pm to 4pm along side Jose Vilarrubia, James Jean and Jim Zubkavich, should prove to be fun and informative.

See you there!

SDCC Custom Bart Qee

Just wrapped up painting on a Fig for Toy2R.

The Figure will be displayed (and I think up for auction of some sort) at SDCC for the release of the 10" Bart Simpson Qee from Toy2R (booth 4152 in Huckleberry Toys).

In case you were wondering...

I haven't been posting because I've been sick after the con.

It seems the only time I ever get a break is if I get sick.

So all I've been doing is sitting watching turner classics while I cough up a lung.

I think I'll make it up with some drawings of classic film stars and starlets.

But either way over the weekend I should be getting things back in full swing.

While on that note... San Diego

I will be at the San Diego Comic Con. I'll be in Artist ally, and I'll be bringing a selection of stuff with me. But if your looking for t-shirts or commissions better to e-mail me ahead of time.

Mocca

Sad to say it but I won't be going down to Mocca as originally planned. If anyone was looking to to come see me get sketches or or any of my swag, please e-mail me and I'll make it up through the post office.
